The recruitment and retention crisis in schools means that our children are missing out as teachers leave the profession in droves. One in four teachers leave the profession within three years of qualifying; a third within five years. 13% of teachers who qualified in 2020 had quit a year later.

The education system is falling down around hardworking school staff, harming the education that children and young people receive.

The Government has refused to properly address the alarming rate at which teachers are leaving the classroom. Negotiating a decent pay rise is a necessary step to resolve the growing crisis in the recruitment and retention of school staff.

We urge Government ministers – if they really do care about children’s education – to engage with the National Education Union, to negotiate a settlement and avoid further action.
